Paul McCarthy

Sometimes it doesn’t take much to be a Huck’s Hero. All Paul McCarthy of Pittsburgh had to do was pick up some trash, but he’s fighting City Hall to do it. McCarthy got fed up with all the litter and brush in his neighborhood. So when calls to the city got no response, he started cleaning it up himself, even though he’s 62 and battling cancer. He says everyone who walked by thanked him—except city sanitation officials. They reprimanded him for not bagging the trash for them, and for not filling out the proper paperwork. Now, he’s facing citations and fines. He says it’s unbelievable. A city spokesman said if everyone piled up litter and called city sanitation to come pick it up, they’d never get their work done. Well, news flash, guys: that is your work. And you obviously weren’t doing it. That’s why Paul McCarthy had to become a litter vigilante. And why he’s today’s Huck’s Hero.
