Joey Lapore
A salute to Joey Lepore of North Bergen, New Jersey, who reminds us once again that the price of liberty is eternal vigilance … or at least staying awake. Joey was riding his bike past the George Washington Bridge when he noticed the guard asleep. Joey woke him up and made him promise to stay awake. But he caught him sleeping twice more. So he took some photos. He was debating what to do when he caught the same guard asleep again, then later that day, caught a second guard asleep. That was the last straw. He posted the photos on the Internet, and within 24 hours, they were a media sensation. The guards lost their jobs, which Joey says he never intended. He also didn’t expect the avalanche of requests for interviews. Joey Lapore says this isn’t about him. He just kept thinking, what if someone blew up that bridge, and he’d been sitting on photos of the guards sleeping, and people asked, “Why didn’t you say something?”
